Complications in the mouth related to cancer treatment

One of the many complications of cancer treatment is chronic dry mouth and the weakening of the bone in your jaw.  Not only are these complications annoying, they can be very serious and possibly even life threatening.  While some side effects of cancer treatment can’t be avoided, you can take steps to minimize the complications and in some cases prevent them all together.

Dr. Jamie Sands and Dr. Jason Sands encourage all of their patients who are about to undergo chemotherapy or radiation therapy to schedule a pre-therapy dental evaluation with a full set of mouth x-rays. This exam and the x-rays become a baseline to determine if the cancer treatment is causing dental concerns – such as gum disease or cavities so we can catch and treat them early – avoiding bigger problems later.

All patients who are about to undergo cancer treatment should have a thorough cleaning before beginning treatment.  Obviously, we want to ensure that you are in optimal dental health to start with.
